CLIFTON DANCER 8-12 ~ Gutsy front runner who has looked progressive in two decent handicaps at Newbury this season. After chasing home the useful Huzzah on her reappearance she appreciated the slightly quicker surface when making all in a 0-85 handicap. The 2nd Shabiba franked the form at Royal Ascot when finishing 3rd in the Listed Sandringham Handicap and although Clifton Dancer only won that race off 80 she comes here in fine form and is improving. This track does suit her style of running but given there is plenty of pace in the race she won’t get her own way out in front. They may just cut each others throats up front and given that she’ll also have to improve to figure in this company she is passed over.
FRIVOLOUS 8-12 ~ Only won a weak maiden at Kempton and she was far from impressive when beating Viscountess, who has since been beaten in a handicap off 67, and Moonlight Angel, who has since been beaten in a handicap off 74. John Gosden’s filly was stepped into Listed company next time and she was well held in 5th. Possible that the mile didn’t suit but that looks as good as she is and she’ll have to show considerable improvement to figure in today’s company. The firm turf is also something she has to prove she can handle as she didn’t look happy when making her debut on similar ground and her best effort on turf came with some cut in the ground. She has a far from convincing profile and her price represents connections rather than form.
HIGHLAND DAUGHTER 8-12 ~ Decent form as a juvenile which culminated in her finishing 3rd in the Group 3 Firth of Clyde Stakes at Ayr. However she has yet to run up to that level of form in three starts as a juvenile and all her best form has been with some cut in the ground. She has plenty to find with Lesson In Humility on her last run at Doncaster and on today’s firm ground she makes little appeal.
KAY ES JAY 8-12 ~ Barry Hill’s filly showed decent form as a juvenile when 3rd in the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes and when 5th in the Group 3 Rockfel Stakes on unsuitable ground. Even in a nursery at the St Leger meeting she emerged as the best horse at the weights having finished a close up 9th off a mark of 100. She deserved her rating of 100 as she has shown good form in some high class races. This season she didn’t appear to have trained on after disappointing finishing positions but she has her excuses. Her reappearance effort on the all weather can be forgiven and then next time at Ascot she was racing on unsuitable soft ground. Back on a better surface at Doncaster she chased home Dixey and Danae who both look highly progressive 3yo fillies. On a form line through Steam Cuisine who was back in 5th Kay Es Jay would have a great chance with the favourite. She looks to have bounced back to form now she has encountered a quick turf surface and expect another decent performance today.
KYLAYNE 8-12 ~ Definitely improved this season and after chasing home Infallible in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn and Sabana Perdida in the Group 3 Chartwell Fillies' Stakes she deserves her place at the head of the market. If you look at the two French horses that only just beat her at Lingfield then she looks unbeatable in this class but the horses in behind temper enthusiasm. Still that was a much better race than this and she showed she doesn’t need to lead. She is likely to get a good toe through the race and given her form this season she is the filly they all have to beat. Conditions should be ideal and everything looks in her favour so there should be no excuses.
LADY AQUITAINE 8-12 ~ Arguably the best of these as a juvenile having finished 7th in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes. However she has yet to race as a 3yo so she must have had a setback to keep her away from the track this long. She also has to prove she has trained on and her sire El Prado didn’t which raises serious doubts. The extra furlong is also a concern having failed to stay the trip as a juvenile. The ground will be fine and she is the highest rated filly in the field but given the doubts she is taken on.
LESSON IN HUMILITY 8-12 ~ Much improved this season but only raced over sprint distances so far in her career. After chasing home Hamish McGonagall in a York handicap over 5f she was stepped up to 6f for a conditions race at Doncaster. She put up an improved effort to beat Vhujon but she didn’t leave the impression that she was crying out for an extra furlong. Given that she still needs to improve to figure in this tougher race the query about the trip is enough to rule the filly out of calculations.
MILTON OF CAMPSIE 8-12 ~ Non-runner
CONCLUSION
This race should be run at a good clip and there should be no excuses that the race wasn’t run to suit. Clearly on form the filly they all have to beat is Kylayne given her excellent form this season. Everything looks in her favour and if she runs up to form then she’ll prove very hard to beat. Her biggest danger appears to be Kay Es Jay, given the uncertainty regarding Lady Aquitaine, as Barry Hill’s filly finally has her conditions. However she’ll be hard pressed to beat the favourite who has rock solid chances and if Kylayne had fancy connections she’d be trading near odds on. Although a short price she looks a fair price given that most of her rivals have queries over their chances but she has none.
